Taking care of your beloved canine companion means making sure they eat healthily, get the proper amount of exercise per day, and being groomed regularly. Grooming your dog not only ensures they maintain a lush and beautiful fur, but it can also help improve their immunity from diseases as well as prevent parasite infestation.
Dog grooming is also relatively easy and simple to do. I will be giving you some pointers on how to properly groom your pet like a professional dog groomer as well as essential grooming tools and products that will help optimize your dog/s hygiene.
Some dog owners tend to jump directly into bathing their dog without proper prep time. This is quite a common mistake to make as I have also done this before learning the importance of brushing your dog first before bathing them.
Brushing your dog thoroughly will help remove excess loose fur from their body. Too many loose hairs actually dampen the effectiveness of the dog shampoo. By removing as much loose hair as possible, we can greatly improve the benefits of the shampoo.
One key aspect of brushing your dog is knowing what brush to use. Dog breeds will have varying levels of fur with some having longer coat while others have shorter.
Combs – This one is ideal for short-haired dogs as it can help easily remove dead and loose hair. It can also help massage their skin and can untangle matted hair.
Bristle Brush – This type of brush also comes in different types. If your dog has long coats it is best to choose a bristle brush that has wider spaced bristles. If your dog has a coarse or rough fur then you need a brush with stiffer bristles.
Wire-Pin Brush – There are two types of wire-pin brush, you have ones that come with a rubber tip on all of the bristles and ones that don’t. Either will do just fine although you might want to get the rubber tip ones if your dog’s skin is sensitive. This type of brush is best used with gods with medium to long thick and curly fur.
Slick Brush – This type of brush has the finest bristles and is a good choice for removing tangles and mats on your dog’s fur.
Brushing your dog to remove excess loose hair is quite simple. I do recommend you first use a detangling grooming spray to help make this process faster and easier. You will want to start at the head and work your way brushing down to their tails using long strokes. Be gentle as to avoid scratching their skin. If you encounter tangles you should gently try to remove it. Don’t forcibly untangle knots on their coat as this can hurt your pet.
You can bathe your dog anywhere you feel is most convenient as long as you make sure that the water is not too cold. Bathing water should be lukewarm as having it too cold will lower the effectiveness of the shampoo.
You can use an ophthalmic ointment to protect their eyes when washing their face. You can also place a cotton ball on their ears to prevent water from entering into their ear canals. Choosing the correct shampoo will boil down to the type of coat your dog has as well as their skin condition. You can ask your veterinarian for the best specific shampoo for your pet. Just remember never to use human shampoo on your dog as it contains harsher chemicals that might upset or cause skin irritations on your dog.
Soak your dog first and start from the neck to the tail. Be thorough when massaging the shampoo to ensure it manages to reach the skin. As for the face, you can use a wet clean cloth with a tiny amount of shampoo. Again, make sure you don’t allow the shampoo to get into the eyes of your dog.
Make sure you clean the groin, armpits, and in between the toes. Wash thoroughly with plain water or use a conditioner to give them a shinier coat.
You can use either a clipper or a traditional scissor when cutting your dog’s hair. It is important to invest in a high-quality clipper. Don’t always go for the cheapest ones as these are usually less reliable. It is important to know where to start cutting through. You should always go for the hind legs and loin area and then move the rest of the body, preferably in the next, then chest, forepaws, and belly (in that order).
You should take your time when cutting your dog’s hair. Don’t move from one spot to another randomly, that’s a good way to make a mess of things. Once you have shortened the length of your dog’s hair you can use an electric razor to make sure everything is evenly cut. Always move the razor on the direction of the coat.
You don’t always need a razor though. If you are strictly using a scissor then just make sure that you cut the fur evenly. This will take longer though. I also advise that you don’t do anything that will excite your dog. Stay calm so that your dog stays calm during this process as well.
The important aspect of shaving your dog is getting the correct equipment for the job. You can’t just use whatever clipper is lying around your home. It must be designed specifically to be used with your pet. You should go to your local pet store to find clippers designed for dogs. Secondly, choose a clipper designed to handle the type of coat your dog has.
Additional tools you will need in regards to clippers will be lubricants to make sure it runs smoothly. You should also get the right type of brush. The guide a listed above will point you in the right direction when choosing the best brush.
When choosing the right clipper there are several factors you will need to consider before making a purchase. For example, is the clipper too loud? Loud clippers might make your dog anxious making it difficult for them to stay put.
You should also think about getting an E comb. This is a clipper accessory that is attached to the head of the clipper and ensures you get an even 1-inch length of hair.
Bathe your dog first before going through with shaving. This ensures that there will be minimal to no tangles on their fur. Follow the brushing and bathing guideline above and dry their coat thoroughly. This will pretty much ensure you won’t come across any problems in regards to unruly fur during the shave. If you find a tangle or mat even after bathing then you can try and use baby oil to gently untangle and remove these pesky mats.
Unless your dog gets easily restless, you can shave them on your own. On the other hand, dogs that do get restless easily will require two persons to conduct the shaving. One to hold and keep them relaxed and the other to perform the shaving.
Sometimes putting a leash on them is enough to keep them still. Just make sure they don’t feel suffocated when using a restraint.
You should always start shaving those hard to reach areas. Most dog breeds are impatient and will be constantly shuffling around. Getting through the difficult to reach areas first when they are still well-behaved will make things a lot easier during the course of the shaving process.
Trimming your dog’s toenails is another important part of dog grooming. Letting your dog’s nails grow too long might affect their posture and put pressure on their toes. If your dog is quite active then their nails will most likely be naturally filed down.
Trimming your dog’s nails can be quite an ordeal, especially if you introduce it late in their lives. In order to help make this process run smoothly, here are a couple of tips I can give you that should help make trimming your dog’s nails easier and quicker.
To answer this question, you will need to consider the type of coat your dog has.
In order to determine how often your dog needs to bathe you will need to ask the following questions:
If you have an indoor dog then you might want to bathe them once a week or twice a month. This should prevent them spreading dirt and grime around the house, on your sofa, and in the bed. The downside here is that this will usually leave your dog with a dry looking coat.
If your dog breed has a coarse coat then they are known to stay cleaner longer compared to dogs with long and soft coats. If your dog has short coarse coat then you can bathe them once or twice a month. Long and soft coated dogs will require a weekly bathe.
If you live with someone who is allergic to dogs then I suggest you bathe and groom your dog as often as possible. This should help lower the amount of dander that builds up in their fur. Bathing your dog once or twice a week should be enough to stop someone’s dog allergies from acting up.
You can buy specially formulated eye droppers and ear canal rinse products. Ask your vet what to use when it comes to choosing the right product for cleaning your dog’s eyes and ears. Your dog will also need a hair trim on their ears, you should only let a professional do this.
You will need to buy a specially designed toothbrush for dogs as well as pet toothpaste. I recommend you assist your dog to get used to the sensation of brushing their teeth first. Start by using a clean cloth dabbed in pet toothpaste. Gently rub it on the outside of your dog’s teeth to avoid getting accidentally bitten.
Once your dog is comfortable enough, you can switch to a dog toothbrush. Just remember to be extremely gentle when brushing their teeth. Some dog breeds have sensitive gums that bleed easily.
Dog grooming is an essential part of being a dog owner. While they can groom themselves to some extent, it never hurts to give your canine companion a helping hand. Hopefully, this article has helped you in learning the proper way to groom your dog on your own. Certain cases, as pointed throughout this article, will require a skilled professional help. As we have already stated earlier, ticks can become quite a nuisance for both you and your dog. Fortunately, the list of the best tick repellent products above will significantly help in ridding your pet of these pesky parasites. Of course, we all know that it is better to prevent this infestation in the first place rather than treating it. With that in mind, here are some important guidelines on how to prevent tick infestation on your dogs and other pets.
Ticks and fleas thrive in heavily wooded or vegetative areas. Shrubs, meadows, and grass are just some of the places you will most likely encounter ticks. If you and your dog enjoy a good hike, I suggest you stick to the trail and avoid going through wooded areas.
If you have a garden in your yard or if you are near wooded areas, I advise you check the spots that have a lot of plants and shade. Ticks also tend to go for habitats like this. Make sure you remove decaying leaves from your yard. You should also make sure that you keep your trash bag perfectly sealed. Pests like rats and raccoons can bring ticks into your own backyard as well.
It is important to check your dog’s coat after taking him out for a walk. It only takes one tick to create a problem so make sure they won’t even have a chance to settle down on your dog’s skin. Using a tick repellent before taking your dog for a walk is a great way to reduce this risk. Check between your dog’s toes and armpits as well. You can also take them to a grooming service every once in a while, for a thorough cleaning.
Tick infestation is one of the most common problems that can affect our pets, dogs especially. But that does not mean that we can’t do anything to prevent it. By using the best tick and flea repellents in the market, as well as applying some preventive measures, we can help make sure that our furry best friend will maintain a comfortable and happy everyday life.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to improve on this with the help of the best flea collar for dogs. Flea collars act as a deterrent against fleas and parasites. The ONMOG Dog Flea Collar is another affordable yet effective way to reduce the risk of your dog from getting flea and tick infestation. It uses herbal ingredients that not only repels parasites but are also mild enough that it won’t cause your furry friend any discomfort or irritations.

Flea collars work using a two-step process. First, it acts as a repellant. It does so by releasing substances that deter or kill fleas and ticks while being perfectly safe for dogs. This substance is released by the collar steadily over the course of a few months. This helps reduce the chances of new ticks and fleas attaching itself to your dog whenever they are outdoors.
The second step is its pesticide properties. Not only can a flea collar repel ticks and fleas, but the substance it releases will also affect parasites that have already latch to your dog. There are 2 types of pesticides used in flea collars. The first one needs to be absorbed by dog’s skin which will then kill off any tick or flea that bites them. Of course, this means you will need the flea or tick to actually bite your dog first.
The second type spreads through the dog’s coat. This type of pesticide kills fleas and ticks on contact. They won’t even need to bite your furry friend making this a better option.
Flea collars are designed specifically to be safe for use with dogs. The ingredients used are tested and proven effective with our canine friend. However, some of the ingredients used can be a cause of concern for humans. For example, organophosphates are a pesticide that is considered to be carcinogenic. It is best to scrutinize the ingredients used to make sure that it is safe for both your dog and other people at home.
I would also refrain the use of flea collars on puppies. Puppies have yet to fully develop their immune system. What is practically safe for an adult dog might cause problems for puppies.
Before you use a flea collar on your pet dog, here are some pointers that you need to consider first:
For puppies – Puppies that are less than 8 weeks old should not use flea collars.
For older dogs – Similar to puppies, older dogs’ immune system will be not as reliable as they used to be. You should consult with a vet first if you plan on using a flea collar on a senior dog.
For pregnant and nursing dogs – Ask any vet and they will all recommend that you don’t use flea collars if your dog is pregnant or nursing puppies.
Before buying a flea collar for your dog, consider the following factors to ensure you will be getting the best possible one:
If your dog loves heading outdoors and frolicking on the ground then I highly suggest you use a flea collar. While not full-proof, it does help reduce the risk of fleas and ticks from attaching themselves on your canine BFF. Of course, you should always consider the safety of your dog when choosing flea collars. Always check to see if the ingredients are all proven safe and effective when it comes to flea and tick prevention for dogs. Also, proper hygiene with your dog will further improve their defense from parasite infestation.

Determining if your dog is suffering from an allergic reaction can be done quickly as long as you know what to look for. I will be running down the most common dog food allergy symptoms that dogs exhibit to help you make the necessary next step and nip this health issue from the bud.
This allergic reaction is the most noticeable. It is usually caused by either environmental allergens or food allergies. Another possible cause here would be the type of shampoo you are using on your pet dog. Try a milder one, if symptoms persist then you will need to go through their daily diet as well as environmental factors such as pollen.
Check their ear to see if there are any black or brown residue build-up. Your dog will also tend to scratch their head/ear almost constantly as if they are trying to remove something lodge inside their ears. This type of allergy is mostly caused by the food they eat. It can also be caused by ear mites but you will instantly distinguish this at first glance. Try changing their diet and clean their ears using a 50/50 mixture of pure apple cider and water.
A dog’s nail normally has a white with a pinkish hue. If your dog has a darker shade of reddish brown then there is a high chance, they are experiencing an allergic reaction. This allergy is commonly caused by food allergens but can also be caused by foot trauma or injury.
This symptom is easier to detect with dogs that have a white coat. Basically, this is an inflammation normally caused by yeast infections or food allergens. You can help treat this allergy with the water plus apple cider home remedy.
Visible discharge around the eyes is another common sign of an allergic reaction. This can be caused by environmental and food allergens but can also be caused by eye trauma. If your dog is experiencing excess tear duct discharge you should clean the area using a clean cloth dabbed in lukewarm water every day.
Below is a list of the most common ingredients that causes an allergic reaction for dogs. If your dog started exhibiting symptoms you should check the ingredients in their food and start a process of elimination to determine the trigger.
Your dog’s breed will also be a factor as some breeds are more susceptible to food allergens like German Shepherds, Shar-Pei, Collies, and Dalmatians to name a few.
When it comes to choosing the right dog food you just need to remember a couple of these golden rules:
Food allergy is quite common for dogs sometimes causes mild inconveniences. Of course, we still want to avoid this as it will cause discomfort for our pet. By being more meticulous with their diet, we can effectively avoid food allergens altogether. Keeping the environment clean will also help reduce environmental allergens. If you are having trouble with choosing the safest dog food to give to your pet, check the list above. That list is compiled using my own personal experience as well as overall customer feedback.
In our current lifestyle it’s very probable that you or your family have owned a pet, or are in close and regular contact with someone who does.
As we settle down and mature in life it is very probable that many individuals will start families. As the kids begin to grow the inevitable day will arrive when they ask for a pet and generally the first choice is a dog or to be more accurate a puppy. The best thing we can do for our dogs is feed them a sensible diet and provide adequate exercise for the associated breed, and of course a generous helping of love and attention (they are our best friends after all).
The dog will very quickly form part of the family and you will become familiar with its mannerisms and habits, you should find it noticeable straight away if changes in its health and general well being begin to manifest.
Therefore it is very important have some knowledge no matter how basic of the breed and possible health issues you may encounter, some of the more common things we could encounter would be dry or flaky skin, severe redness and sores, seasonal molting, bad breath, habitual chewing at paws and claws and of course the occasional soft or loose stool and vomiting.
If ailments occur, this can be for a number of reasons and it’s always good to remember dogs are susceptible to similar diseases and infections as humans one area that carry’s great similarities are allergies,
Would you be able to spot dogs with allergies?
Dogs with allergies can suffer great discomfort if the allergy is not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner.
Many dogs with allergies can have symptoms that present themselves in different ways from a simple case of minor itching or flaky skin to the more severe dermatitis type symptoms with weeping sores.

This type of allergy usually occurs if a change of diet has happened. If diagnosed fairly early on then treatment would be of trial and error to remove the offending product from the diet and things should settle back down.
As the name suggests the contact allergy is exactly that the dog has suffered a reaction to something that it’s come into contact with, this could be very simply a new bed, been out for a walk a ran in long grass.

In other instances, unhappiness and health conditions can make your dog grow thin. And underweight dogs often are prone to many problems.
If you have an underweight dog, and this can be stressful in getting her to put on weight. People are rather fast to judge, even when you are making efforts to help your dog’s weight increase. here is an article for your dog to eat: Can Dogs Eat Asparagus?
Be sure to talk to your vet or Likeable Pets if you really are struggling to help your dog increase its weight. Dogs that keep losing weight even when they are eating food. Or they might have a sudden change in appetite, leading to seeing a vet quickly.
Even then, before you start making diet changes, it’s essential that you consult with a qualified vet. They will be able to identify if weight gain would be best and offer you valuable guidelines on ways that you can do it right.
To start your dog on the recovery process, you will need to identify why he is underweight. Such information will help you come up with a strategy that helps. If you just adopted your pet, the probable culprit is malnourishment and stress. But, healthy dogs might also drop their weight time due to various reasons.
Below is a look at some of these reasons.
Your pet’s food plays a big role in their general health. It’s crucial that you provide your dog with high-quality foods, which supply them, all the necessary nutritional content. Cheaper foods will use substandard ingredients that might cause more harm in the end.
Unhealthy ingredients such as soy and corn aren’t good for dogs. These are used in the cheap foods in place of pure protein. Though your dog is eating all the foods you provide, it’s possible it does not support your dog enough.
When a dog’s stomach is not feeling well, he will stop eating. Often, this problem will lessen after 1-2 days. But, if your pet has lost a significant amount of weight, it is possible the problem is more serious than it appears.
A common issue that causes a dramatic loss of weight is parasite infestation. Worms may be spread via water, fecal matter, and much more. It can be hard to tell when your dog is suffering from worms.
Most worms may take months to show up in your pet’s poop. Yet, they’re wrecking havoc in your pup’s gastrointestinal tract. They will absorb lots of the nutrients that are needed by your pet to live him with only a fraction of food consumed leading to weight loss.
When you suspect it’s an issue, take your pet to the vet. Vets will give proper diagnosis and give you treatment options which will improve your dog’s appetite.
When your dog isn’t eating, you could monitor their behavior. Several dogs are rather picky eaters. They might get bored with their usual kibble or not like some ingredients. When this is the case, you’ll need to change up foods till you get one that works. Alternatively, you could add some supplementary gravy to improve the appearance of the food.
Another problem that could affect your dog’s appetite is anxiety or depression. Dog’s can undergo different emotions like humans do. Such emotions could cause loss of appetite and extreme lethargy. This is common with pups that have been in new homes or have a traumatic event.
As you try to determine the right weight for your pet, your vet’s office is the best place to start. Different dog breeds will naturally have stockier or slimmer look, and your vet will help ensure you create befitting weight gain goals for your dog.
Remember “normal” does not mean healthy for most breeds. It’s usual to see Labs, Pugs, and Chihuahuas that resemble small hippos — yet that doesn’t imply it’s healthy. The reminder works both ways: healthy greyhounds will be rather boney!
It’s normal to see a few ribs and hip bones on healthy greyhounds, while the same level of bonyness for most other breeds it’s concerning.
Generally, you should see a narrowing on your dog’s waist. Many dog breeds need to have visible faint ribcage outlines.
You will notice a difference in your pet’s weight depending on activity level. For instance, a border collie has “competition weight” to be agile, canicross and herding, he’s muscular and lean. Allow your dog to gain some weight in early winter when she is in her “off season.” She stays healthy and fit, but doesn’t need to be trim year-round!
After your dog is feeding again, putting the suitable food in her bowl (or puzzle toy) helps make weight gain easy and smooth.
Discuss with your vet through this process when your dog is chronically malnourished or he has a delicate stomach. Then your vet will want you to replace bulky foods with alternatives that are easier on its stomach.
Below are some suitable foods for weight gain:
Among the biggest mistakes that you could make is to start the task with no a plan. In switching methods midway through can confuse your pet and throw off their progress. You will need to be firm on how you will get this done, considering dogs are very good with routine.
The simplest way to help your dog put on some weight is to change the number of calories you offer your dog. For the next few weeks and even months, you’ll notice your dog add on weight. Even a slight change will make a big difference eventually.
To guarantee that your dog adds weight in a good and healthy way, you should start the procedure slowly. Giving your dog too much food might lead to many health problems. A very common is one is the re-feeding syndrome. It occurs when an undernourished dog is given large food quantities too suddenly. Their bodies cannot handle such a change. They’ll undergo hormonal and electrolyte fluctuations.
Start by examining their present caloric intake then add 10 percent. Continue with the additional 10% increase for about a week. During this time, monitor your pet’s behavior and progress. Ensure that they are managing the food all right.
Again, have a look at your pet’s stool to confirm it’s healthy. After around a week, you could add an additional 10%. Continue repeating this each week until your pup reaches a healthy calorie count.
When your pet is already comfortable eating sizable food portions each day. You could consider changing to a formula, which is packed with calories. The high-quality food contains more nutritional value per piece of dog kibble than the cheaper options.
Opt for foods that contain more protein. Not just that, but selects wholesome proteins like chicken, beef, fish, chicken, and lamb. Real meat sources contain more amino acids compared to other meals or byproducts.
Look for dog food that contains 20% and more protein content. Also, you can provide foods with somewhat higher fat contents than roughly 10 percent average. However, do so sparingly. The best way is you always go with lots of protein that can be turned into muscle mass.
As you’re picking a calorie-rich program, take a look at the ingredients list and select something that has a more kilocalorie amount.
Another way is to add supplements to your pup’s food to add their calorie consumption and ensure that they get the nutrients they require. This option is great for picky eater dogs. Mixing whatever wet food or some dog-approved gravy and the pup’s dry kibble is one common option. This is a fast way to increase calories and even enhance the taste.
Alternatively, you add some balls of real food. Cook chicken or beef add a nice calorie boost. Those foods that have a higher content in Vitamin B are best. Vitamin B helps break down these foods that your pet and turned them into usable energy.
A few examples of Vitamin B-rich foods are liver and liver. Similar to any diet changes, it’s essential to add the above-mentioned ingredients slowly to avoid your pooch getting gastrointestinal upsets.
Though commercially available dog meals are great, the nutritional content in raw homemade meals is unbeatable. For homemade meals, it is possible to change the recipe to favor your dog’s unique requirements. Of the most common recipes is Satin Balls.
This Satin Ball recipe has been used commonly for dogs that require gaining weight within a rather short time. Shelters often use it to help bony dogs recover. They’re full of calories and don’t have any unsavory stuff which you’d find cheaper kibble. These balls are easy to make and may be stored in a fridge for future consumption.
Also, dogs love its taste!
Dividing up your dog’s calories into several smaller meals every day will have a big difference, particularly when you’re working with a pet with lower appetite. Smaller portions will, in the end, increase your pet dog’s energy levels and metabolism throughout the day.
Also, your dog will get more excited to get food at mealtimes. Picky to might see their food as boring after it’s stayed out for over a few hours.
As you split up your dog’s meals, ensure that you follow the same times each day. This trains them to follow your routine. Dog’s will start feeling hungry once mealtime nears, and this will help ensure that dogs eat everything left.
Your dog needs enough exercises to help them stay healthy. Since gaining weight starts with more food consumption, the extra food needs to accompany by some muscle growth.
Bony dogs are probe to have underdeveloped muscles, so you should get your dog to move so that become stronger. When you’ve increased his calorie and protein intakes, they will have all they need.
Additionally, besides for muscle growth, exercises will do wonders to pets overall demeanor. Unhappy dogs will not eat.
So offering the lots of opportunities to play and run around, as it’s a great way to avoid anxiety and stress. Avoid anxiety and stress. Enjoy by creating a loving surrounding that they’ll enjoy.
After your pet has attained their planned weight, it’s crucial that you give them those tools they will need to maintain it. Here, you can reduce your dog’s caloric consumption to normal and begin developing a much normal routine.
You need to look for high-quality foods that are full of vitamins, protein, and minerals. Pair this food with frequent exercises and your dog will be on his way to leading a long and a healthy life.
The process of fattening your dog should not be a difficult process. It involves being patient and vigilant. Your dog won’t get to the goal weight instantly, so it’s imperative that you continue doing so. This is until your pet dog is thriving and recovered fully. Here’s an article for you to give your dog a food. Can Dogs Eat Shrimp?
Whenever you feel like relaxing and reducing your stress, peppermint is a good way to do so. Its aroma is soothing and it warms your body up. However, for dogs, peppermint makes a different appeal and you would find them far away from you since the scent unbearable for them. Likeable Pets can help you regarding on your pets problem.
But, before you remove peppermint oil off your shopping list, there is a growing debate regarding peppermint oil and its benefits for dogs.
What exactly are the facts and should you really use peppermint oil on your dogs?
Many people often believe that natural remedies, like essential oils, are safer than those made by factories since it does not have a lot of chemicals. However, this idea should not be taken seriously for several different reasons.
First and foremost, there are a wide variety of plants and essential oils that are actually toxic for either human or animal use. Sadly, these plants and oils are not properly regulated and tested by government authorities like the FDA. As a result, there is no guarantee that these natural remedies or supplements really work and if they have no side-effects whatsoever.
Of course, one should not immediately disregard these natural remedies because some of them may provide comfort and relief if you know how to use it properly. Doing a little research can show you which products have positive reviews from pet owners and vets alike.
In recent years, peppermint oil has been growing in popularity due to some pet owners and holistic veterinarians recommending it as a supplementary to a dog’s anti-flea and tick routine. This idea has some merit because peppermint has long been used as an ingredient for insect repellent and it is still used today. Nowadays, peppermint oil is combined with other essential oils to be more effective.
Sadly, peppermint oil cannot kill fleas unless it is combined with stronger ingredients like citrus extracts and sodium lauryl sulfate. Once it is combined with these ingredients, peppermint oil will not be a major contributor to killing fleas.
Currently, the effectiveness of peppermint oil to help repel and kill fleas and other insects for dogs remains disputed by various parties. Studies are also being done to determine how much peppermint oil can be used before it can help get rid of fleas.
While there are some evidences that peppermint oil can be a good anti-flea and tick supplement, it is actually not very safe for dogs or any other pets to use.
For dogs, there are several reasons why it is not very safe for them. First and foremost, dogs would find peppermint’s scent overwhelming due to the 300 million nose receptors it has to help them smell better. If for humans the scent is not that strong, it is actually way stronger for dogs by several times.
Peppermint oil also presents several complications aside from overwhelming a dog’s senses. Once it comes into contact to skin, it can cause skin irritation and if it is added to flea-related complications, it can trigger infections and anemia. If dogs ingest the oils, it can trigger vomiting and sluggishness.
If the oils are not safe, what about the leaves?
In cooking, peppermint leaves have a lot of great applications. Its scent alone would help drive out pests in your garden when you have it planted and taken care of.
Fortunately, while peppermint is considered toxic to dogs, you can still use peppermint products but in regulated quantities. However, before you do use any product with peppermint, ask your dog’s veterinarian which items you can use safely and how to apply them without harming your dogs.
When your dog’s vet gives a go signal on you using peppermint oil and other products with peppermint, here are some things you can do to lessen the impact on your pets:
For any pet owners, it is a nightmare to get rid of fleas and ticks since it can cause havoc not just on your pet but also for the entire family. However, if you are considering of using natural remedies like using essential oils, you must double check if it is safe for your pets. Always ask your pet’s veterinarian before you use them to protect your pets.

Variety is the spice of a dog’s diet, and nutritionally complete and balanced treats can provide that spice. Treats can also be an integral part of your dog’s training program am, so it’s important to know what snacks are the safest, healthiest and most palatable for your pet.
Many of the treats currently available in pet supply stores contain large amounts of sugar and fat, which can lead to an overweight animal. It’s a good idea to read the label on any treat you’re considering. If sugars are high on the ingredients list, it’s best to avoid that product, especially if your pet is obese or diabetic. The ASPCA recommends low-fat, high-fiber varieties. Chewable pet vitamins, relatively low in calories, are also a good choice, but make sure to follow the manufacturer’s suggested dosage.
You can solve the treat issue by making your own treats. Here are a few that my dogs love and aren’t too complicated.
OATMEAL GO-BANANAS DOG TREATS
3-4 lg eggs
1/3 cup oil
1/3 cup honey
1/3 cup molasses
1 cup milk
3 ripe bananas, mashed
3 cups whole wheat flour
3-6 cups cooking oats, depending on texture
Mix together by hand eggs, oil, honey, molasses, milk and bananas. Add flour and oats, mix until it has the consistency of cake mix. Spread the batter in a greased 10×15 pan. Let the dogs like the bowl and spoon. Bake 1 hour @ 325, turn oven off and let treats sit until oven cools. Cut into desired shape with knife or pizza cutter. Cover and refrigerate or freeze if they won’t be used within a week to 10 days.
* I really like this recipe because you don’t have to roll them out and use cookie cutters. My dogs surprisingly really liked them even though there isn’t any meat or peanut butter to be found in the ingredients list 🙂
PEANUT BUTTER BONES
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/2 cup peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/4 cup water
4 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup cooking oats
Combine wet and dry ingredients separately. Then mix all together well. Turn dough onto floured surface, knead until thoroughly mixed together. Roll out to 1/4 inch thick, cut out with bone shaped cookie cutter.
Place on greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 45 minutes. Cool on rack.
Cover and refrigerate or freeze what won’t be used within 7-10 days.
*This recipe is really easy to roll out, unlike others I’ve tried that are really sticky and hard to work with.
HEALTHY GARLIC HEARTS
4 cups whole wheat flour
1/4 cup olive oil
2 teaspoons fresh minced garlic
2 tablespoons garlic powder
1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup water
Mix all ingredients, roll out and cut with heart shaped cookie cutter. Place on greased baking sheet and back at 325 until golden brown (30-45 minutes)
After they’ve cooled, cover and refrigerate or freeze what won’t be used within 7-10 days.
* The original recipe called for 1 cup oil and no eggs. It was WAY too much oil and impossible to form into a call let alone roll out. You may need to adjust oil, eggs and water to get it to the right consistency. Remember with those who use garlic not to overdo it with your dogs…especially the little ones…it is a natural blood thinner. Just a helpful hint!!
Mix all these dry ingredients together:
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup white flour
3/4 cup dry milk powder
1/2 cup quick oats
1/4 cup corn meal
1 tsp. sugar
Cut in 1/3 cup shortening. Mix in 1 egg. Dissolve 1 Tablespoon instant bouillon in 1/2 cup hot water and add to mixture. Mix with a fork and form dough into a ball. Knead for 5 min. Roll out to 1/4 inch or less, (less is better) and cut into shapes or slice into rectangles or squares. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 10-12 min. Do not under bake as they will mold quickly if not dry.
May be frozen for future use.

In dog parenting life, dog farts are normal and there is mistaking in it either—loud and proud, silent but deadly, they will happen. But then again, when should you be concerned?
Just like humans, dogs do fart, which implies it is perfectly normal to pass a certain amount of gas. Even then, bacteria and some of the very foods that affect us can affect a dog’s digestive tract. In case your dog suffers indigestion ask for help from your mobile pet grooming professional or veterinarian.
What can you do to reduce flatulence in dogs? Read on to find out about causes and what you can do to help your dog.
Dogs can become flatulent and several breeds are inclined to be gassier than others. To them, this is perfectly normal, and they do so for a number of reasons such as high-fat diets and ingestion of too much air. Though dog farts are mainly silent, those that can be heard can be seen as amusing.
The primary culprit behind foul dog farts is related to bacterial fermentation; it’s a process which is usually caused by digestion of foods which are not easily digested by dogs’ stomachs.
Not surprising, one of the main foods that cause this condition are beans. However, other foods that are rich in fiber, like peas, oats or soybeans can have the same effect. The farts that are produced by the larger dog breeds are normally more “fragrant” compared to that of smaller breeds.
This is because larger dogs have bigger digestive tracts, therefore, they have a bigger area for the bacterial fermentation to happen.
There are various things you can do to help you manage your dog’s health.
One primary step that you can take would be to avoid buying dog foods that have soy, wheat, or corn, that are hard for dog’s systems to digest. Alternatively, it’s wise to choose dog food that has highly-digestible, quality proteins.
You need to also avoid letting your dog consume in any leftover bites you may have at the dinner table. This is regardless of how adorable and loud they are as they beg.
Almost all human foods are simply not easily digestible for dogs. By making human food a habit then bacterial fermentation might potentially be increased, which will not be good for everyone.
There are also several natural remedies, which can relieve dog flatulence. Herbs like cayenne, peppermint, fennel, and thyme act as agents that relax stomach muscles that in turn will help to reduce the build-up of the amount of intestinal gas. Including probiotic supplements to pet dog’s diet will also help regulate the digestive tract.
Finally, exercises have a vital role to play in helping control your doggie’s flatulence. This does not have to be strenuous for it to work. It can be something as simple as taking a leisurely walk can help make a lot easier for him to digest foods properly.
Flatulence in dog’s that is unrelenting and persistent might be an indication of a much bigger issue.
Ailments such as intestinal parasites and inflammatory bowel diseases might be responsible for this if you start to feel as though you need to have on a gas mask all day long. Therefore, do not ignore any changes that you notice in your dog’s level of flatulence. It could be a sign of a bigger underlying issue.
Lastly, when diarrhea or vomiting and any other strange symptoms accompany your dog’s flatulence, it is advisable that you consult your veterinarian.
As far as stopping your pet dog’s excessive gas and them getting relieved from this flatulence goes, you can try natural methods. When they do not work and this condition still remains, then you could be tempted to consider giving your pet dog medicine in order to bring relief to their situation.
Though this can certainly be done. Even then you should not even consider giving your pet dog medication for excessive gas. And especially without the supervision and right guidance of a veterinarian. Your dog will need to undergo an inspection to determine the cause of their condition.
Your vet is the only one that’s able to inspect your pet dog and determine whether there is an underlying medical condition. From there they can tell the cause of the excessive gas in their bodies, which might obviously require medical intervention and shouldn’t be ignored.
From the diagnosis, it could be that a lifestyle change has to be implemented or daily routine should be modified. All this is with the aim of stopping the excessive flatulence from building up in your pet dog’s system.
After the examination and your veterinarian has determined that none of the above situations is true. This could settle for medication as the best solution to go help in treating your pet dog’s excessive gas issue.
Only then is it perfectly fine for your dog to get the prescribed medication. And only a vet should determine this. Also, do not attempt self-diagnosing your dog or simply assume that by giving them medicine for his condition right away is okay.
In dog parenting, gas is normal! However, when it is too much, and too often, you can start by looking at your dog’s diet. Make certain that your dog gets lots of exercises, avoid giving your dog table scraps, and be on the lookout for any unusual symptoms, which go beyond farting.
When diarrhea or vomiting or other unusual indications accompany your dog’s flatulence, be sure to consult your vet. Avoid self-prescribing your dog’s condition without the proper guidance and supervision of your vet. Only give your dog medication that has been prescribed by the vet. Better treat your dog a good healthy food like freshly cooked shrimp. Can Dogs Eat Shrimp?
If it is you, stop using the dog as an excuse!
